One Hour Radio Program Discussing the Eliminating the Barriers of Gender Bias; a Motivation for the Inclusion of women in Enugu State Politics

The program was anchored and presented by Lillian of Solid FM with the Host Speaker Oguadimma Ijeoma Joy (Executive Director, WEPBI) and the Guest Speaker Mrs. Margaret Nwagbo (Development and Woman Rights Expert). The discussion was made open by the host speaker who agreed that there were a lot of barriers limiting a woman from participating in politics.

Host Speaker: Barriers limiting women include family because women are perceived as family care takers. Factors that limit women in Enugu state include cultures and tradition, lack of orientation. They believe politics is for men. Women also see other women in politics as misplaced priority. They say that Politics is meant for the elders. Family is one of the factors limiting the participation of women in politics. They will tell you a woman takes care of the family… everything in the house; they tell her ‘you are a woman and you are not supposed to do things like this.’

Guest Speaker: Women have no substantial role and they are limited by poverty, violence, lack of orientation; they are limited by constitutional constraints, illiteracy, and ignorance. They believe it is a man’s world; cultural practices like patriarchy encourage this. Women are barely supported with information but people pick on detrimental information from her past. There are a lot of educated women. Today more women professors are recorded. The unsafe political environment is also one of the factors the family protects women from. Late night meetings are yet another hindering factor; nobody wants his wife staying out late in the nights, attending political meetings. Women have no impact on the political sphere. No cooperation by political parties, lack of will; these factors affect women. We are trying to limit these hindrances and encourage them better. In schools women should take up leadership positions and roles in life.

Host Speaker: Why are boys placed first, especially in this modern day tradition?

The Host Speaker further shared a life experience on how she was marginalized because she was a girl and a boy must head certain positions irrespective of if a girl is qualified. In her words, ‘This is a kind of factor that discourages women who have political interest.’ This further stirred the advocacy for more women participation and inclusion in politics.

Host Speaker: Women also need strong mentorship. Women are doing great in the fields they govern. More so, women are good at multi -tasking. There should be no barriers. The society should stop stigmatizing women. Men today are condoned. The African man is never wrong but women are crucified. This mentality should be completely obliterated. We should limit the limitations so women would excel in chosen schools and fields.

Guest Speaker: Women should help each other out; to the electorate and be more involved in the political process. Women are poorly represented at all levels and in every sector. The figures keep falling. This is the time women should wake up and take charge. Women should go beyond ‘women leaders’ position’. The likes of Iweala and Akunyili are great representation for women. Women should support each other as well. The discrimination against women should stop! Women should be allowed to take up vocations of their choice. Parents as well should encourage their female children from an early age. The unhealthy competition amongst women should be curbed, how can this step be achieved?

Host Speaker: Everyone must believe in themselves to be able to achieve success, and attain greater heights. People’s opinion should never matter as this can be discouraging. A lot of women have innate capacities but are discouraged by people’s opinion and background. Mentorship is an important step. Some persons need just a trigger to excel.

Guest Speaker: How women should have more confidence in themselves? Education is an important key for unleashing inbuilt potentials. Teachers too should be sensitized by NGOs. NGOs should be result oriented and less money driven. The girl child should be enlightened. Successful women should come out to aid this process.

Presenter: Do you think that religious doctrines affect women’s role in the society. Does it relegate women especially as assistants to men and not as humans that can measure up to major expectations?

Host Speaker: Religious doctrines do not affect women’s role.

Guest Speaker: A lot of female pastors are successful. As much as a woman should be submissive, men should also love and take care of their wives. The Catholic Women Organization (CWO) is a good example of an organization in the traditional Catholic Church where women govern and make major policies that influences the Church.

Host Speaker: What about Deborah in the Bible? She was a woman and a great leader too so religion is not a limiting factor to women being leaders in the society.

The presenter made the phone lines open at this point and callers began to call in from their different locations to air their view on the topic at hand.

Caller 1: Dropped

Caller 2 (Mary): When you were talking, it was as if you were just referring to me, because back then, I always told my mum, I want to be a lawyer. She called me and my sister she said what do we want to become in future I told her I wanted to become a lawyer and the first thing she told me was that ‘lawyers die on time because they do accept bribery. I told her it will not happen to me because not everybody collects bribe as they become lawyers. I might make the change. She discouraged me. I redirected and told my mum and brother I would become an actress and my brother said that actresses pass through a lot of process and some people sleep with their managers to get to the top. I was tired and confused. I was very intelligent. My sister encouraged me and told me to pursue my law career and I’m doing well right now.

Guest Speaker: I believe your mother got it all wrong. I’m proud of you. I celebrated 40 years as a lawyer the other day and I am still alive, still moving and still healthy. With the passion I’m hearing in your voice right now you would have made a good lawyer.

Host Speaker: She can still do it. It is not late.  You can still be whatever you want to be. You can still be a lawyer. You can go ahead and apply for it. Anything that makes you happy is who you are. I encourage you go back and become that which you want to become.

Ferdinand from Afikpo: Good morning ladies in the studio. I like this topic. Like in Nigeria, our leaders are the problem. They don’t give an enabling environment for the females. In other countries like you mentioned, the women are given a condusive environment but will it happen in Nigeria here?

Camillus from Abakpa Enugu: I have to thank you very much for what you are saying. The truth is before you talk about women u first look at the type of country; how Nigeria is moving. The like of Ngozi Iweala is supposed to be our president right now or our governor at least. When it comes to women she is supposed to be our role model; the way she is graced; starting from her life style. You know with women going into politics, the first thing men think of is am I going to lose my wife? Or am I going to get my wife back? Ngozi Iweala has all the qualities. She can go out there and her husband can go back and sleep. She is not going out to entice people, and we have this kind of women. Some women would make their men live in the fear of whether she will return to her family. But the problem is that for some of our women, if they are given that opportunity they might end up destroying their families.

Guest Speaker: Thank you Camillus for that and I hope you can hear me? First, you have to have confidence in your wife. If you are suspicious of her every move, if you believe she will go into politics and mess around she will equally mess around as a teacher, or a nurse. Know the woman you married, encourage her, carry her along, trust her, and believe in her. No woman becomes loose because she wants to belong in politics. A virtuous woman is a virtuous woman so please cancel it from your mind that when a woman goes into politics she becomes a loose woman.

Caller 5: Dropped

Caller 6: Dropped

Caller 7: Dropped

Caller 8 (Solomon, Obinagu): Dropped

Caller 9: Dropped

Caller 10 (Okorie Ogbonna): I just want to commend your show.

Presenter: Thank you so much

Caller 11(Valentine Chukwuelosalam): The general director and founder of Global Exotic. Please I like this topic. There is something that is going on and it is very viable and going viral. It happens in so many places. It is a gift from God. There are certain things that a woman can pass through that a man may not be able to. If you put the women in a position that she can have the right to pass out such training and potentials she will do very well in comparison to a man. We should not use gender differences to limit women and present them wrongly. Finally, in terms of men allowing their women to become leaders; this depends on how you accommodate your wife. The type of trainings given to her even before you married her; what you chip into her, will establish the basis of trust you have in her. Thank you and God bless.

Guest Speaker: It’s been wonderful talking to everybody here. I enjoin CBOs, CSOs, NGOs and people of substance to fund programs and mentor our girls, empower them; women should support women and with our numerical power make policies that can be beneficial to the girl child. Thank you.

Host Speaker: There would be a ‘Women Leadership Academy Training’ where women would be mentored to believe in themselves, there would be room for self-discovery and talent maximization. Subsequently, the world would follow suite.

She encouraged women to believe in themselves as well.

The show came to an end successfully.

Discussions on The Role of Men in the Active Inclusion of Women in Enugu State Politics on “The View Point”- a 1 Hour Live Program on Solid FM 100.9 hosted by AmazingGrace Ajayi.

The speakers during the program were Oguadimma, Joy Ijeoma Founder/Executive Director WEPBI, Barr. Abanah Sylvia, President, FIDA Enugu Branch and Jennifer Ejinkeonye, Program Officer WEPBI. The host presented the topic and the following conversation therein ensued:

Presenter: What is your strategy to get the men involved?

ED WEPBI:  We have a strategy figured by next month that is men engagement to make them understand the benefits/importance of women participation in politics. Target areas include: the communities, urban and rural areas.

Presenter:  Do you think men are doing enough or complacent?

Barr. Abanah: They are not doing enough. Women are handicapped. The issue is money, especially in politics.  Women have a lot of engagement at home and men do not help at home, don’t encourage women, and don’t campaign for them. There are basically no empowerments for women coupled with expensive position forms. Men feel threatened women will over power them if given the opportunity. Given the patriarchal system of the African setting. Factors like these draw women back; more so, some women are ignorant of their right to participate in politics. When given the opportunity, women perform very well e.g.  Akunyili, who made NAFDAC, known when it has been there.

Presenter:  Given a situation where both husband and wife are interested in a position, what would you do?

ED WEPBI: I will analyze the situation, ask each of them what position they are interested in, assess their strength and encourage the person with the capacity to be supported by the partner.

Presenter: What if the decision will endanger the home?

Barr. Abanah: Men should help out in the home because women are so engrossed in the home that they are not chanced and thereby withdrawn. Men rarely think both ways. Most reasonable men would consult their wives in decision making because they know they are going to contribute immensely and meaningfully.

ED WEPBI: No reasonable man will discourage the wife from engaging in politics/leadership positions or businesses.

Barr. Abanah: It’s the man’s name that is being uplifted and promoted.  Some friends of husbands also negatively influence them even when they give their wives a chance. A failure has the chance to do better and excel. Don’t be afraid of failing, try first, nobody is perfect. Women are endowed with passion and concerned of the people and their welfare.

CALL 1 from Peace from Cross River: The reason is some women are so full of themselves and become so greedy and less submissive and that’s why men do not support women’s participation in politics

CALL 2 Dr. Ikemefuna from Enugu: commended the program, encouraged the discussants to join active political groups. He also commended the women on the good works they are doing.

CALL 1 discussed:

ED WEPBI: Why should we say when women make money, they become arrogant?

Barr. Abanah:  When you marry your friend, you will accommodate each other.

CALL 3 Mr. Okechukwu from Enugu: When women start making money, their attitude change likewise men but women become promiscuous thereafter.

CALL 4 Emmanuel from Enugu: It’s not like women participating in politics is bad but some positions are not good for them because women are charged with domestic duties and generally take care of the home. Positions like governorship should not be open to women because they should take care of their husbands even if their children are all grown.

CALL 5 Mr. Reuben from Esu: appreciated the host and encouraged the women in their strive/fight for the inclusion of women in politics. He is not pleased about the way politics run in Nigeria; violence and thuggery which is not safe for women. He agitated that the Nigerian government should create an enabling environment for women’s participation in politics.

Reacting to this, ED WEPBI stated there is no position a woman cannot handle as long as the husband understands the wife and her job. Men misunderstanding their wives job nature have led to women being discouraged. Women can achieve milestone if given the opportunity.

Presenter: Aside from finance, what other things should a man do to actively include his woman in politics?

Barr. Abanah:  Men should advocate and empower their women. Because women are good managers at home, men should sensitize people women can also do well in politics.

Jennifer: Are you sure men are not scared of women checkmating their corrupt practices because women do not condone evil?

Barr. Abanah: let men support women not only in politics but in other leadership positions. They should be that he for she in every area. The use of religion and culture/tradition to discourage should be checked. Any woman who is capable should be encouraged to vie for any leadership/political position of interest, and should be allowed to explore opportunities.  In villages and all rural areas, women should be included/appointed as cabinet members and in decision making process. Their inclusion will help the good and proper representation of women.

Presenter: The problem is women do not take themselves seriously in areas of self-development, education and growth, these outlook encourage men to follow suit.

ED WEPBI: Next month, we will start a leadership academy to educate women to know who they are, rediscover their strength, and locate their innate ability. The pandemic was in the way else the program would have been born.

Barr. Abanah: Women in reality also need to wake up from their slumber and stop being jealous of each other, the unhealthy competition among each other, and the feelings of insecurity.

Advocacy visit at Honorable Onyinye Ugwu (Deputy Leader) @ Enugu State House of Assembly held on Tuesday, September 1, 2020

This is a one on one session with the Honorable member, Onyinye Ugwu who is the Deputy Leader and also the Chairperson Gender Affairs committee, Enugu State House of Assembly in her office which was anchored by the Founder/Executive Director of Women Empowerment Education and Peace Building Initiative (WEPBI), Oguadimma, Joy along with Barr. Chinweike Okereke, Founder/CEO, African Law Foundation (AFRILAW), Ebele Nwakalor, M&E/Communications Officer (WEPBI) and Jennifer Ejinkeonye, Program Officer (WEPBI).

She was briefed on what informed our visit – the Women’s Voice and Leadership (WVL) project, a five year project aimed at increasing women inclusion in politics in Nigeria which WEPBI is carrying out in Enugu state in partnership with ActionAid Nigeria and sponsorship from Global Affairs Canada, by the ED of WEPBI.

Question: Do you support advocating for active participation of women in politics, in Enugu state?

Answer: Yes, I support wholeheartedly.

Question: How many women are members of the Enugu state House of Assembly presently Ma and how do you suggest we improve the number and inclusion of women in Enugu state political house of Assembly?

Answer: Three women. I suggest we add more because more voices, more impact.

Question: Are there issues bothering around women’s political leadership involvement in Enugu state that concerns you Ma?

Answer: I don’t think so within my own office, maybe the problem generally is among women coming together and understanding one another.

Question: In your opinion Ma, how do we take the problem of stereotypes and discrimination of women in a government, parliament and other political sphere?

Answer: There’s nothing like discrimination. The main thing is to join, once you’ve joined, you have joined except you discriminate yourself.

Question: How do you suggest we support women’s participation and effective leadership in our democratic government?

Answer: The support of male and female is needed and also to  identify with the community. I started town hall meetings in my consistency which has never been done before and also shared palliatives during the lockdown.

Questions: Do you feel there is a lack of solidarity among women generally?

Answer: They are supportive, they are part of my been here. We don’t need more laws to create more room for women in leadership but we have to start by bringing up qualified women to take positions because we have the constitution that gives us the right to vie for any position. Also, we need to lobby the right people.

Questions: How can we engage men as partners and gender advocates to act collectively on this issue of women inclusion in the politics of Enugu State?

Answer: There are two consistency seats – one male and one female. The strategy is to arrange underground if there is a possibility of vacancy of the seat and lobby to fill the gap. The Governor stood behind me during my election as the party leader, we should lobby him for more inclusion.

Question: Don’t you wish to go higher than this position?

Answer: If there’s opportunity I’ll seize it. These things start from identifying the vacancy, plotting a capable female candidate, do grassroots works, identify with the influential stakeholders, political leaders and familiarize with them.

The Honorable member said that the governor is ready to partner with us for more women inclusion in politics and leadership citing his insistence that six women must be involved in party leadership from ward level, local government level and state level.

In her reaction, the ED of WEPBI appreciated her for the audience she gave us and requested that we would like to partner with her office to organise more programmes on the increase of women participation in politics in Enugu state. She further told her that she will be part of our radio and TV program, and part of the facilitators in our leadership training academy we are about to start for women interested in leadership we have enrolled from the communities we visited.

Furthermore, Barr Chinweike, the Founder/CEO of AFRILAW told her that he is excited about her achievement. He added that mapping to know available positions should be done, likeable women should be identified and trained, and influencers should be visited and advocated on this issue including the governor. He noted that there has been an increase in women participation in his tenure and hers speaking from his experience with the government when he worked on the issue of gender under voices for change, DFID.

In conclusion, she affirmed her readiness as well as that of His Excellency, the executive governor of Enugu state to partner with us in our forthcoming programme to be organised with our partners and solicited that they are informed early enough.
