{"id":2032,"date":"2023-05-12T11:21:11","date_gmt":"2023-05-12T10:21:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wepbi.com\/en\/?p=2032"},"modified":"2023-05-12T11:21:16","modified_gmt":"2023-05-12T10:21:16","slug":"20-year-old-fatima-sues-father-for-attempted-forced-marriage","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wepbi.com\/en\/20-year-old-fatima-sues-father-for-attempted-forced-marriage\/","title":{"rendered":"20-Year-Old Fatima Sues Father for Attempted Forced Marriage"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div id=\"section-g256200\" class=\"wp-block-gutentor-e6 section-g256200 gutentor-element gutentor-element-image\"><div class=\"gutentor-element-image-box\"><div class=\"gutentor-image-thumb\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"normal-image\" src=\"https:\/\/wepbi.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/MM.jpg\"\/><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>A woman identified as Fatima has reportedly dragged her father to a Shari\u2019a Court sitting in Kaduna State for forcing her to marry a stranger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 20-year-old Fatima told the court that she had someone she loved but her father, Aliyu Muhammad had threatened to take her to the village and marry her off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fatima\u2019s counsel, Malam Bulama also told the court that his client didn\u2019t file a suit against her father out of disrespect for him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bulama said: \u201cThe father wants my client to marry a man in their village in Niger state. Right now, she\u2019s living in her aunt house because he threatened to take her to the village and marry her off.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also on his part, Fatima\u2019s father, Aliyu Muhammad said his late parents chose the man for his daughter before their death and he had to respect their wishes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI married my 6 daughters off in the village and they are doing well. Fatima\u2019s mother is the brain behind her stubbornness. I need permission to consult with my people over this matter,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The judge, Isiyaku Abdulrahman, held that a father under the Shari\u2019a law, has the right to choose a husband for his daughter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He however noted that forced marriage is not encouraged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou are her father, therefore you should allow her to present the person she wants to marry and if you are pleased with his religion and character, you allow her to get married,\u201d the court held.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Bulama said: \u201cThe father wants my client to marry a man in their village in Niger state.
