Women in traditional cabinet councils recount their experiences and success as WEPBI trains them on leadership capacity

Leadership they say is full of experiences, lessons, success, and sometimes a lot of struggle to meet up with the demand and manage the need of the people.

At a one-day training in Enugu as organized by Women Empowerment Education and Peace Building Initiative (WEPBI), in line with the Women Voice and Leadership (WVL) project sponsored by Global Affairs Canada with support from Action Aid Nigeria to strengthen the capacity of women who were added to the Igwe cabinet in some local governments, the women recounted their experiences and shared their success stories as members of the community ruling council.

Facilitating the training, Mrs. Miriam Menkiti, took the women through a resounding lecture on leadership, laying more emphasis on the qualities of a good leader. According to her, a good leader should be accountable, loyal, peaceful, assertive, proactive, transparent, humble, and tolerable to mention but a few.

Mrs. Menkiti said that women should be able to possess these qualities to be resourceful members of the cabinet.

Sharing their experiences, the women said they have recorded a lot of success in the area of conflict management, community development plans, community sanitation, and market arrangement for better flow of business activities.

The Executive Director of WEPBI, Ogudimma Ijeoma joy, in her address pleaded with the women to also contribute to discussions in their different council meetings. According to her, the women should not be there as bench Warner’s, rather they should make impacts that will qualify their membership in the council.

The women also contributed to the training process by answering some questions from the facilitator. The questions include; who is a leader? And why were they as women added to the traditional cabinet council?

The women cabinet members came from Aninri, Igbo Eze North, and Udi Local Government areas all in Enugu state.

At the end of the training, the women appreciated WEPBI and the sponsors and supporters of the project saying that they will put all that have been thought to them into practice for better results.
