Safe and secure environment according to United States Institute of Peace is one in which the population has the freedom to pursue daily activities without fear of politically motivated, persistent, or large scale violence. The role of women in safety and security of the environment cannot be overemphasized. Inclusion of women in environmental security plans enables for effectiveness and sustainability of the cause.
Women tend to be more active in environmental observation and hence play crucial roles in early warning system through not high tech surveillance or espionage but careful observation of the environment noting signs of instability and environmental changes ranging from sudden loneliness of roads, roaming of unfamiliar faces in the neighborhood, market activities such as increased demand for light weapons and other tension-raising activities in the surroundings.
Women as one of the most vulnerable parties in the face of insecurity should raise their concerns and lend their contributions as safety and security is a collective task. Women’s active participation in security of the environment is paramount as their role is indispensable.
